In Focus:
Devexco International Pty Ltd
Bill and Tina Slattery established Devexco International in 1989.
The company is involved in the organic edible oil business and, in particular, the organic safflower oil business, controlling all aspects of the supply chain from planting through to the production and export of retail ready product.
Both Bill and Tina have had long involvement in agribusiness, with the move into organics in part facilitated by a personal quest to determine the linkage between their daughter's excema skin condition and common chemicals found in soaps, cosmetics and detergents.
This experience laid the foundations to develop a business based on a philosophy seeking the avoidance of chemicals in production methods, and with a commercial focus on developing a profitable market in the growing organic sector.
Since commencing operations, the biggest problems encountered by the company have been in ensuring an adequate supply of raw material (safflower) on a regular basis - particularly impacted by drought conditions in Australia - as well as the requirement to meet various standards for compliance under different certification systems around the world.
Despite these trials, the company has continued to establish a solid international reputation, with over 90% of product currently exported to Japan and Europe - and with future plans to export to the US, having observed the large and growing demand for organic oils in this country.
In continuing to develop markets, Devexco acknowledges the importance of NASAA certification to their business.
"A credible certification system is the cornerstone of success in the organic business sector. It ensures that the organic status and integrity of the product is maintained throughout the production process", says Tina.
"We chose to certify through NASAA as it is recognised by the major international certification bodies, and known as a credible Australian certification body by overseas customers."
