In Focus:
Organics at the Market. VIC
Organics at the Market is a successful retail operation, located at the Queen Victoria markets, which has specialised in the sale of fruit and vegetables since 1993. The operation was one of the original outlets certified through the ORGAA (Organic Retailers & Growers Association, Australia) program - which formed the foundation for NASAA's current trading standards.
Owner and Manager John Gordon's principle attraction to organics was related to the environmental benefits of sustainable agriculture, and the subsequent health benefits flowing from such practices. His philosophy formed the basis for the business venture with a focus on providing the freshest, cheapest and most diverse range of fresh produce available in Melbourne.
Whilst initial difficulties arising from the lack of quality supply have improved significantly in recent years, the business has been built primarily upon the strength of its customer relationships.
"A friendly and trustworthy relationship with my customers is the core of my business", says John.
"Our certification through NASAA forms a part of this relationship in ensuring transparency to the consumer, sending a clear message that there are no grey areas in organics. Produce is either organic (and certified) or it is simply not organic", he says.
Whilst the fundamentals remain for the venture, John and his business partner intend to continue to consolidate their current operations into the future, through improved merchandising, branding and presentation.
